ROCK TESTING · BORONIA, MELBOURNE

Rock strength &
physical properties.

Laboratory testing can help characterise the strength and physical properties of rock under defined test conditions. Contact our Boronia team before preparing or sending specimens so the requested methods, dimensions and condition can be confirmed.

ROCK STRENGTH & PHYSICAL-PROPERTY TESTING

AVAILABLE TESTING

Match the method
to the project question.

01

Uniaxial compressive strength

UCS testing measures the axial compressive response of a prepared rock specimen under the conditions of the selected method.

Specimen geometry, end preparation, orientation and condition must be confirmed.

Rock uniaxial compressive strength (UCS)
02

Point-load index

Point-load testing provides an index result from loading a rock specimen between concentrated points under a defined procedure.

Supply specimen dimensions, form and orientation information where relevant.

Point-load strength index (PLI)
03

Moisture content

Moisture-content testing determines the water present in the tested portion using the applicable preparation and drying conditions.

Protect the sample condition before delivery and disclose any material hazards.

04

Porosity & dry density

Physical-property testing can determine porosity and dry density for suitable specimens under the selected method.

Confirm specimen size, saturation and preparation requirements before dispatch.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Confirm suitability
before preparation.

Should I request UCS or point-load testing?

Use the method required by your project specification. These methods apply different loading arrangements and do not provide interchangeable results. Send the specification if the requirement is unclear.

Can irregular pieces be tested?

Suitability depends on the requested method, specimen form and dimensions. Send photographs and approximate dimensions before dispatch so the laboratory can review what may be possible.

How much rock should I send?

The number and size of specimens depend on the selected test and project requirements. Contact the laboratory before sampling, cutting or dispatch.

Will the testing be NATA-accredited?

Accreditation applies to specific activities. Tell us if accredited testing is required so we can confirm the applicable scope. View the laboratory’s NATA listing ↗.
